Let's Write

Conformity

So today in my English class, we were continuing our group work where we have to compare two poems by Philip Larkin. The poems I’m doing with my friend, Ghislaine are ‘Self’s the Man’ and ‘Dockery and Son’

We’ve found that in both poems, Larkin dismisses the idea that one should marry so as to fit in with society. And it got me thinking about this whole idea of Conformity.

We’ve all conformed in some way- believe me I’m probably one of the greatest victims, agreeing to certain things because ‘it’s the norm’ or ‘everyone does it’. But from analysing these poems, I’ve found that by conforming, you lose sight of yourself and who you truly are. Since I’ve finally admitted that I’m not perfect and don’t need to be, I’ve decided that I really don’t need to conform to anything either.

My God tells me that I’m amazing just the way I am:

‘I am fearfully and wonderfully made’

– Psalms 139:14

No one has the right to make me or YOU feel otherwise.

‘To me it was dilution’

– ‘Dockery and Son’ by Philip Larkin

Conformity dilutes and destroys the soul.

BeYoutiful (so cheesy but I’ve loved that statement ever since I was obsessed with searching for inspirational quotes and that one stuck with me)

Have a great Friday and an even more amazing weekend!

Peace & Love,

My thoughts are best expressed by writing.
So that's what I do - I write.

It's how I make sense of it all.
My prayer is that someone somewhere is blessed or is able to relate to what I write.

"Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them..." ~ Romans 12:6
