So the Emmy’s occurred last night and if you know me, you’d know I’m obsessed with Award shows because I like seeing people honoured for their hard work. I feel it’s a huge boost in confidence for anyone and I mean who doesn’t like a boost?
So I woke up today scrambling for my phone to obviously find out who won because I’ve never really been an avid watcher of the Emmys but I think I’ve been swayed. Three beautiful black actresses received awards from the Academy for their stellar work.
Viola Davis. Uzo Aduba. Regina King.
I loved seeing their reactions and the grace they exuded in accepting these huge honours. For some, like Viola Davis whose the 1st Black woman to win the award in ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series’, history was made. For others, situations repeated themselves as Uzo Aduba received her 2nd Emmy. I was simply in awe of how women of colour are slowly beginning to be recognised for their work. Gone are the days where there could be only one ‘Halle Berry’. There is so much raw talent, so many ideas that really makes me believe in the words of Kanye West, we really need to ‘listen to the kids bro!’
I was watching an interview where Taraji P Henson seemed so bewildered by the idea that her and Kerry Washington would be pit against each other seeing as they are good friends and though she read for the part of Olivia Pope, she immediately knew the role was meant to be for Kerry. It was incredible seeing the amount of support she had during that interview for other black females like herself and during the Emmys as she stood defiantly as Viola Davis won an award and cheered on Regina King. Meanwhile, Kerry was in a flood of tears in disbelief (as was I.)
Okay so I’m sounding more like a reporter rather than someone sharing their happiness in what happened at the award show.
Anyhow, the main point is I’m so SO happy for these beautiful women who inspire me not just through their art on their respective shows but through their grace and how they live their lives.
I’m inspired to grab opportunities placed in my way and you should definitely do the same. Life is too short.
