A HISTORY OF FIGHTERS: THE WOMEN WHO PAVED THE WAY

‘Although not talked about as much, there are several women from our past who played key and pivotal roles in various movements.’

Since the start of the #EndSars protests, we have seen women take up some of the key roles in energising and organising the movement. They were at the first protests, there was generational diversity, they organised funds for legal and medical aid, food, drinks, security – YOU NAME IT! They were able to do it, and get it done to the best standard possible.

Without a doubt, we all owe them a debt of gratitude for their competence, intelligence, fearlessness and selflessness. A humongous thank you goes out to each and every one of them.

I think we can all agree that this movement is unlike anything Nigeria has ever experienced in its 60 years of independence. Although it was unprecedented, I think it is necessary to look back at Nigeria’s history to learn a bit more about the women that paved the way for these strong women to play their part effectively. Although not talked about as much, there are several women from our past who played key and pivotal roles in various movements. It is important to remember and note some of the key contributions made towards women’s rights and political rights in Nigeria today.

So, I will be highlighting 7 of these women and their stories. I hope you are as enlightened as I was writing this!
