You better act like you know
That I’ve been through worse than you
– “The Worst”, Jhené Aiko
My favourite teacher made me think today.
Do we really have to go through the worst to learn? Today we were recapping Virgil’s view of War within the epic, ‘The Aeneid’ and we examined how a character who had initially been one of the most savage warriors, suddenly realised the immensity of death, because it became personal for him.
Ironically, I was just planning an English essay on Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’ when a similar argument was formed in my mind. Did Lear and all the other characters who experience grave injustice/suffering have to go through all they did as a learning experience? Was it all worth it?
I find it so interesting how our lives have already been planned out for us and we’re simply strolling the paths of our destinies. It’s almost as though bumps have been placed specifically on the way but it makes me question why we have to experience these bumps? Is it all worth it in the end? Right now, I really hope it is because my biggest bump right now is A-LEVELS.
At the same time, do we make additional bumps for ourselves? Do we lead ourselves to ‘the worst’ just so we can come out the other side and claim to have learned from it or does this learning occur spontaneously?
So many questions, not enough answers….
Peace & Love,
T
